All Skin Types                         SUPERFICIAL/WITHDRAWAL       (0%)

This solution will work on anyone, because it does not have any DHA. O% solutions are designed as training solutions for new technicians to practice technique. If you are training on someone with a medium to dark skin tone, you may always use Killer Envy: Color Guard Darkening Drops to darken the existing color guard in any 0% training solution.

Skin Type 1                 TEASE/CRAVING      (5%)

Fair and ivory skin tone. Red heads and pale blondes. Pale eye colors. Perfect solution for clients who are typically sensitive to the sun, have freckles, and generally sunburn easily. Sometimes these skin types will not be able to tan in the sun at all, and will only sunburn. Think of Kate Hudson or Gwyneth Paltrow.

Skin Type 1-4              SINFUL/HABIT          (8%)   **Most clients fit between8-10%**

Light and Medium skin tones. Medium blondes or light to medium brunettes. Light to medium eye colors. Works best for clients who have lighter colored eyes, usually burn a little in the sun, but are still able to achieve a light tan. Reminds you of Jennifer Aniston or Jessica Simpson.

Skin Type 3+               GREEDY/ADDICTION          (10%)  **Most clients fit between8-10%**

Medium and dark skin tones. Dark blonde to dark brunette. Medium to darker eye color. Perfect for clients who will sometimes sunburn, but will likely not peel, and their skin will turn a medium tan. This skin type will always get a good solid tan on vacation. Think of J Lo or Kim Kardashian.

Skin Type 4+:              GLUTTONY/STRUNG OUT  (12%)

For use with dark skin tones. Intense product. Works best on those with a deep base tan or dark natural skin color. This skin type always tans exceptionally well on vacation. Reminds you of Salma Hayek or Tyra Banks.

All Skin Types                         DEADLY/INTERVENTION   (COMPETITION %)

This solution will work on anyone, because it does not have any DHA. This solution is engineered with FD&C coloring agents to deliver an extremely dark caramel brown color. Competition solutions are designed as performance solutions for professional technicians to use on competitors, typically in the body building industry.  These solutions would look completely unnatural if they were sprayed on a regular client, and are not intended for that purpose. This color will be dark enough for all competitor’s skin types.

Don’t even think about pulling the trigger on that spray gun until both you and your client have settled on the answers to these questions.

Ok, now you’ve done it. Your starting to ask the questions that distinguish those who play in this industry for spare change from those who will become recognized spray tanning artists in this industry. Don’t think that everything will be perfect if you simply use the right solution. You also have to know what you are doing. That always means that you have to know more than your clients, and it sometimes means that you have to make sure that they have realistic expectations. Remember, you can always use a darker solution on a client during their next tan, but if you put 12% solution on a 5% skin type, you will likely not have the opportunity to try out for the part of ‘spray tanning technician’ for this client again. Ask the questions that need to be asked, and use the right solution.

  1. When you go in the sun for more than two hours, what happens to your skin? You:
    • a. Catch wicked sunburn.
    • b. Will probably be making a pit stop for Aloe, but will look sun kissed for sure!
    • c. Will make quite a few people jealous when you return to work with your smoking hot sexy tan.
    • d. Will have to change the ethnicity button on our Facebook profile.
  2. When you are at the end of your vacation, and you are out to lunch at your last beach bar type restaurant, you look around and see many types of tans. Are you?
    • a. Not rockin a tan at all.
    • b. Rockin’ a tan with reddish undertones.
    • c. Rockin’ a tan with brown undertones.
  3. When you are out and about and thinking about getting your spray tan on, whom do you most want to look like?
    • a. Snooki J
    • b. Kate Hudson
    • c. Jessica Simpson
    • d. Kim Kardashian
    • e. Tyra Banks

Answer Key:

  1. a.5%. b. 8% c. 10%. d. 12.
  2. a. Since this client doesn’t usually get a tan, they are likely a good candidate for either solution, but in the 5-8% strengths. b. This client will do well with the Envy Temptations line because they have naturally reddish undertones in their developed suntan, so this line will look very realistic on them. c. This client will love Envy Addict, as they have naturally brown undertones in their suntan.
  3. a. Do not tan this person if you want to stay in business.b.We would suggest no more than a 5-8% on this client. c. Reach for either 8 or 10% and you will see them again. d. Use the 10%, but sell them tan extending lotion as a must. e. This person already has an amazing skin tone so you will just be making it more fantastic with a 10-12%.
