Suntanning Myths
Suntanning myths are generally just based on misinformation that gets passed from one person to the next, so I thought we should address some of the big suntanning myths and try to clear the air.
Myth 1: Indoor tanning is more harmful than outdoor tanning because in the former the UV light exposure is more intense.
Fact: This suntanning myth gained popularity almost immediately after sun tanning beds were introduced in the market. In fact, indoor tanning is far safer than outdoor tanning. The US Food and Drug administration has a set of guidelines that are imprinted on the indoor tanning equipment. When the equipment is used in accordance, indoor tanning is more beneficial than outdoor tanning. Additionally, indoor tanning equipment is scientifically calibrated to expose the body to the exact amount of ultraviolet light that minimizes burning and maximizes tanning. On the contrary, tanning outdoors is unregulated and you have to watch for a number of factors such as geography, season, weather condition, time of the day and the ozone layer. The best habit is to wear sun protection whenever you are exposed to sun, even if you have a tan.
Myth 2: Showering directly after a tan washes it off.
Fact: This is another suntanning myth that is almost comical yet needs to be addressed. Taking a shower after a tan cannot wash it off. It takes around 24-48 hours for a natural tan to develop on the skin. When the UV rays reach the skin they activate the melanocyte cells present in the epidermis to produce the pigment ‘melanin’. This production of melanin results in suntanning as a defense mechanism against sun and sun-burning due to over-exposure. This melanin eventually flakes off in a cycle of 4 to 8 weeks during which new skin develops. You can maintain a healthy looking tan by keeping your skin hydrated and exfoliated, but you certainly can not ‘wash off’ a suntan.
Myth 3: Tanning indoors harms your internal organs. They might just get baked!!
Fact: This suntanning myth is completely false. The UV light emitted from a tanning bed is similar to the UV light emitted from the sun. In no way can it penetrate deeper than your skin to cause any harm to your internal organs.
Myth 4: The odor that you get after a tan is your organs baking!!
Fact: The odor that you notice after an indoor or outdoor tanning session is the “after tan” odor. It is produced by harmless bacteria. You can apply lotions containing ingredients that prevent this odor.
Myth 5: You have to burn first to get a sun tan.
Fact: This suntanning myth is similar to the “no pain no gain” myth that does the rounds of several gymnasiums. A sun burn is a result of over exposure to sun and cannot fade into tan. It is actually harmful for the skin and can cause damages like premature aging and chapping of the skin and in some cases even skin cancer. Moderate exposure to UV-light along with sunscreen protection will prevent you from getting sun burnt.
These are some of our favorite suntanning myths.
Happy Tanning!
